To protect your water system, some Metro Detroit municipalities are requiring single-family residential irrigation customers to have an approved backflow prevention assembly installed and tested yearly. Whether or not this is a mandate does not diminish the necessity of proper backflow testing.
To assist customers in completing the required testing some cities initiated a new program 2008 that would provide customers the choice of allowing the city to manage the annual testing process. The city contracts with certified testers to perform testing and limited repair of the assembly.
All residential irrigation customers are automatically scheduled for testing. Customers who prefer to coordinate their own testing can "opt out" of the city-coordinated program and complete the required testing using an approved tester of their choice like Same-Day Backflow Testing.

The testing staff from Infinity Fire Protection will be in uniform with visible identification. Each vehicle used will have a City magnetic placard affixed to the driver's side of the vehicle.
Your testing process will require a brief, 15-minute interruption of the water service and utilize less than one gallon of water.
Once the backflow prevention test has been completed, their technician will leave a door hanger with your backflow prevention assembly test results. It is not required for you to be home during the testing.
The cost of the City coordinated testing program is around $50, which includes the testing fee and minor repairs and replacement parts if needed. The fee will appear on your utility bill following the completion.
Opting Out Of Their Expensive Program
Customers who do not want to participate in the program must inform the City of their decision to opt out.
Customers who choose to opt out of the program are still required to have their backflow prevention assembly test completed.
